LABFORS

The Labfors is a universal benchtop fermenter which is easy to handle and used for fermentations in the range of 0.5 (optional 250ml) up to approx. 10 liter working volume. The unique and appealing design of the LABFORS is a result of the maximizing functionality in the smallest possible space. LABFORS needs a floor area of only 375 x 410mm and therefore can be set up in the smallest corner. With the option of electrical heating, it can even be run independently from a connection to a water supply for specific applications.
In addition to these advantages regarding space, its microprocessor control in u-DDC mode which allows utterly flexible and user friendly operation, needs to be mentioned. Of course, the advantages of the memory card are also available with LABFORS.
Another feature is the menu-driven display which makes operation very easy. Equipped with an RS 232-interface for the connection to a computer or printer LABFORS answers all demands of modern data technology. To protect your data, the system requires a password, defined by the operator.

For dosing of corrective agents and substrate, four peristaltic pumps are available. They can all be configured freely with absolutely no dripping. Further pumps can be connected via an analog box. The stirrer shaft can be connected via a mechanical seal or by an axial magnetic drive developed by INFORS.

The user can choose between a dry and a water temperature system. In order to prevent local overheating, all culture vessels are heated from the outside via a thermal or glass double jacket.

Sterilization of the culture and feeding vessels can be performed in an autoclave for maximum sterility.

The key feature of the Labfors is its tremendous flexibility. A wide range of accessories and alternatives make it the ideal choice for long-term use even if the demands on the system change dramatically over time e.g. a change from growing yeast continuously to batch production of insect cells.

Cell Fermenter

A special stirrer-system was developed which preferably is used together with the INFORS axial magnetic drive. Aeration can be performed via head space and/or sparger. The ideal gas mix is controlled via valve combinations on the fermenter or calculated and fed via a gas mixing station.

The vessel is fitted with broad-bladed impellors for low-shear and special accessories such as a spin filter can be added for semi continuous culture using beads for cell immobilization.

External Measuring and Control Components

Turbidity measurement, exhaust gas measuring or pump control etc. can be added into the system with the connection of an analog box. The implementation of additional parameters like pressure or redox is thereby rendered possible.

A key application for the analogue box is the addition of variable speed pumps for continuous culture applications. Some fermentations require multiple feeds at varying rates so the capability to add pumps is invaluable.

Expanded Fermenter System

The u-DDC-control allows the expansion up to 6 individual fermenters. Thanks to multi-fermenter technology up to 2 satellites can be connected to and controlled by the central master unit. Each of these 3 fermenter stations operates as individual bioreactor, with up to 7 parameters.

The control panel of the Labfors displays the data from all active fermenters simultaneously. Changing set-point values is made simple by the use of a specific keyboard shortcut. This offers a solution combining the advantages of both Labfors and Sixfors.
